DERBY LOVE, IS NOT JUST WHAT YOU SAY IT'S WHAT YOU DO!
Dustbowl Update:
The
3rd annula Dustbowl invitational is bringing teams from Colorado, Utah,
and all over California to Bakersfield. Twelve teams competing
for the cash prize of $500 and braggind rights galore!. Flat track
toller derby is the fastest growing sport in the world. Generally
when we first talk about Roller Derby almost immediately someone says "
I used to LOVE watching roller derby on TV! Is it like that?" Yes and
no we say. The fast paced action, body checks, and whip assists
are all still very much part of the game. However, flat track
roller derby rules and the different physics of skating on a flat
surface, versus a banked track, make the strategies and game play very
different. Also, in its later years, televised roller derby was
staged, like WWE-style wrestling. Today, flat track roller derby
is a legitimate sport, and the hits, spills, booty shorts, broken bones
and competition are 100% real.
The host team is our very own
Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) league, the Derby
Revolution of Bakersfield. Team founder, Coach, Jammer, and
Blocker Tonya "Tonka Toy" Warren, is a local celebrity. A
graduate from BHS 1988. Her degree in Physical Education and
Masters in Administration at Cal State University of Bakersfield.
While attending she competed in softball with 2 National
Championships and California MVP. Tonka has the experience with 6
full seasons of Roller Derby and a degree to back it up. Her
coaching style on and off the track sets the words "There is no such
thing as too competitive." The team is also lookiing for a building big
enough to practice in and host bouts permanently.
The Derby
Revolution has an Adult team (18+ years of age to a pushing 40+) and
the DRB Brats, the Jr's team (8-17 years of age) practicing two
